How to Get Your Driving Licence

A clear, step-by-step guide to the official NTSA licensing process — from your first application to holding your licence.

How It Works

Getting your driving licence in Kenya follows a structured NTSA process. Here is every step, explained clearly.

1 Step
Before Training Begins

Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence (PDL)

Before you can legally sit behind the wheel — even for a lesson — you must hold a valid Provisional Driving Licence (PDL) issued by NTSA. This is done entirely online via the eCitizen portal.

  • Visit ecitizen.go.ke and log in to your eCitizen account
  • Select NTSA (New) from the government services menu
  • Click Apply for Provisional Driving Licence (PDL)
  • Select your driving school and vehicle class (A2, B1, B2, C1, etc.)
  • Answer the physical fitness questions accurately
  • Upload your passport-size photo
  • Complete payment to submit your application
Training without a valid PDL is illegal and may disqualify you from the NTSA test
2 Step
Official Examination

Book and Sit Your NTSA Driving Test

Once your training hours are complete, apply for the driving test through eCitizen. The test is conducted by an independent NTSA examiner — not your driving school instructor.

  • Log into ecitizen.go.ke → NTSA → Apply for Driving Test
  • Select your preferred test centre and date
  • Pay the test fee of approximately KES 600 per attempt

The test has two parts — both must be passed. Combined pass mark is 70 out of 100:

  • Part A — Theory Test: Oral questions plus MTB drills marked out of 50.
  • Part B — Practical (Road) Test: Conducted by an NTSA examiner on public roads, marked out of 50.
If you fail one part, you re-sit only that part. After 3 failures, additional training is required before re-sitting.
3 Step
Immediate Next Step

Receive Your Interim Driving Licence

Immediately after passing both parts of the NTSA driving test, you are entitled to an Interim Driving Licence. This is a temporary but fully legal document that allows you to drive on Kenyan public roads while your physical licence card is being processed.

  • Upon receiving result notification" Passed" ,you are required to pay 750 on e-citizen for the Interim DL.
  • Valid for 6 Months from the date of issue
  • Covers the same vehicle class you were tested on
  • Keep it with you whenever you drive — it is your proof of licensure
Apply for your full licence promptly — the interim expires after 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting your driving licence in Kenya. Can't find your answer? Ask us below.

The NTSA Highway Code test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam taken at an NTSA-approved test centre. It covers road signs, traffic rules, safe following distances, speed limits, alcohol and fatigue laws, and first-aid procedures. The pass mark is 70%. Prime Motor's classroom component covers all tested areas.
The Defensive Driving course teaches you to anticipate and respond to hazards before they become emergencies. It covers advanced hazard perception, managing fatigue and distractions, driving in adverse conditions (rain, night, traffic), and reducing your accident risk significantly. It is valuable for both new and experienced drivers.
Yes — this is a legal requirement. You must obtain a Student Driving Licence from NTSA via the eCitizen portal before any training can legally begin. Training without it puts both you and your instructor at risk. The application takes 3–5 working days once your documents are submitted correctly.
Most students complete the full journey in 2–3 months when training consistently. Typical breakdown: Student licence 3–5 days · Training 4–8 weeks · NTSA test slot 1–2 weeks · Licence issuance 1–3 weeks after passing.
When you arrive for your first lesson at Prime Motor, please bring:
  • Original National ID or Passport
  • Your Student Driving Licence (physical copy or eCitizen printout)
  • 2 passport-size photos
Our team can guide you through the eCitizen application if you have not yet obtained your student licence.
Government fees (separate from driving school tuition) are approximately:
  • Student Driving Licence — KES 650
  • NTSA Driving Test (per attempt) — KES 600
  • Full Driving Licence (3 years) — KES 3,050
Total government cost is roughly KES 4,300. Contact us for our current tuition fee schedule.
Minimum age requirements vary by class:
  • A2, B1, B2 — 18 years
  • B3 Professional — 21 years
  • C1 Light Truck, C Medium Truck — 22 years
You may begin training a few months before the minimum age, but you cannot sit the NTSA test until you are of age.
Don't worry — it happens to many first-time candidates. You only re-sit the part you failed (theory or practical), not both. Each re-sit costs approximately KES 600. After 3 failed attempts, NTSA requires additional training before you can re-book. Our instructors work specifically on the areas flagged by your examiner.
Yes. If you hold a valid foreign driving licence, you may be eligible to convert it to a Kenyan licence through NTSA without repeating full training — subject to bilateral agreements between Kenya and the issuing country. A Refresher Course at Prime Motor will also help you adapt quickly to Kenyan road conditions. Contact us for guidance.
