Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting your driving licence in Kenya. Can't find your answer? Ask us below.

The NTSA Highway Code test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam taken at an NTSA-approved test centre. It covers road signs, traffic rules, safe following distances, speed limits, alcohol and fatigue laws, and first-aid procedures. The pass mark is 70%. Prime Motor's classroom component covers all tested areas.
The Defensive Driving course teaches you to anticipate and respond to hazards before they become emergencies. It covers advanced hazard perception, managing fatigue and distractions, driving in adverse conditions (rain, night, traffic), and reducing your accident risk significantly. It is valuable for both new and experienced drivers.
Yes — this is a legal requirement. You must obtain a Student Driving Licence from NTSA via the eCitizen portal before any training can legally begin. Training without it puts both you and your instructor at risk. The application takes 3–5 working days once your documents are submitted correctly.
Most students complete the full journey in 2–3 months when training consistently. Typical breakdown: Student licence 3–5 days · Training 4–8 weeks · NTSA test slot 1–2 weeks · Licence issuance 1–3 weeks after passing.
When you arrive for your first lesson at Prime Motor, please bring:
  • Original National ID or Passport
  • Your Student Driving Licence (physical copy or eCitizen printout)
  • 2 passport-size photos
Our team can guide you through the eCitizen application if you have not yet obtained your student licence.
Government fees (separate from driving school tuition) are approximately:
  • Student Driving Licence — KES 650
  • NTSA Driving Test (per attempt) — KES 600
  • Full Driving Licence (3 years) — KES 3,050
Total government cost is roughly KES 4,300. Contact us for our current tuition fee schedule.
Minimum age requirements vary by class:
  • A2, B1, B2 — 18 years
  • B3 Professional — 21 years
  • C1 Light Truck, C Medium Truck — 22 years
You may begin training a few months before the minimum age, but you cannot sit the NTSA test until you are of age.
Don't worry — it happens to many first-time candidates. You only re-sit the part you failed (theory or practical), not both. Each re-sit costs approximately KES 600. After 3 failed attempts, NTSA requires additional training before you can re-book. Our instructors work specifically on the areas flagged by your examiner.
Yes. If you hold a valid foreign driving licence, you may be eligible to convert it to a Kenyan licence through NTSA without repeating full training — subject to bilateral agreements between Kenya and the issuing country. A Refresher Course at Prime Motor will also help you adapt quickly to Kenyan road conditions. Contact us for guidance.
We understand that paying tuition in one lump sum is not always easy. Prime Motor offers a flexible M-Pesa instalment plan — a deposit secures your slot and the remaining balance is paid progressively as lessons proceed. Speak to our team at enrollment to set up an arrangement that works for your budget.
Pay via M-Pesa Paybill:

Class B1 certifies you to drive automatic transmission vehicles only. Class B2 certifies you for manual (stick shift) vehicles — and automatically covers automatics too, since manual is the higher skill. B2 is generally the more versatile choice. Our instructors can advise based on your lifestyle and intended vehicles.
Yes. Prime Motor offers flexible scheduling for working professionals and students. We have slots on weekday mornings, afternoons, and Saturdays. Simply discuss your preferred schedule with our front desk when you enroll and we will match you with an available instructor.
Yes — we are happy to guide you. While the eCitizen submission is your personal application, our front-desk team can walk you through every step, help you understand which documents to upload, and point you to a recommended optician for your Form DL1 eye test.
